Maximal Precision with the CM-Method

The CM-Method (Carbide-Moisture-Method) is one of the fastest and most reliable measuring methods for identifying/finding water in liquid or granular materials. This method is over 100 years old and was scientifically mentioned for the first time in June 1905 (Society of Public Analysts). P.V. Dupré was the Author of this publication and explained its works in the following: Calcium carbide reacts with the water of a sample, which previously had been weighed out, to create acetylene and calcium hydroxide. As acetylene is gaseous, the rising pressure in a closed system allows us to determine the amount of water in a sample quite precisely (thousandth range).

The equilibrium partial of water in this reaction is at 1.87 * 10-13 bar. This is 10’000 times drier than saturated air at -100˚C. With that the equilibrium conditions are clearly more stringent than for example moisture determinations in a drying cabinet, step wise drying at 105˚C. For more details, please contact us.
